Ironically enough, there was a time when the appearance of (or what looked to be) a white person put fear in the hearts of black people. Remember that little thing called… SLAVERY? Just in case you forgot, we were torn from our families and sold to the highest bidder, our women were raped, and our men beaten for trying to escape unwarranted captivity.
There was also a time when white people wearing hoods, scared black people. Anybody remember the KKK‘s? We were lynched, beaten, hung, just because of the color of our skin. We couldn’t share the same waiting room, bathroom, water fountain, or door! We were refused equal rights, and education, deemed ignorant, & violent, and even sprayed with hoses and attacked by dogs for protesting the inequality! Thinking about all of this makes me wonder if we, as a people, developed what is seen to be an “intimidating” demeanor as a defense mechanism, for our own safety.
Funny how the tables turn. Now people (of all races) find it necessary to “defend” themselves against us and confront us if they [who are THEY anyway] don‘t think our behavior is up to par. It doesn’t matter if we’re just flirting innocently with a pretty lady (research Emmett Till from Chicago IL), taking the trash out (research Darius Simmons Milwakee, WI ), listening to music with our friends (research Jordan Davis Jacksonville, FL), or just walking home from the store with some snacks (well… we all Trayvon Martin). Isn’t ironic that we’re now the ones to be feared? We’re ridiculed for “playing the race card,” when we see injustice, but can you blame us? Look at your track record America.
